Black is the New Neutral

After remodeling this couple’s master bathroom a few years ago, we were so honored they asked us back to renovate their kitchen. The home built in 1969 is on a beautiful piece of property, the kitchen had decent space, but obviously was way overdue for an update; and check out that funky exhaust fan configuration just hovering over the island. Keeping the basic footprint we designed the kitchen to maximize the space by removing the soffits for new upper cabinetry to the ceiling and utilizing the full oven wall with multiple pantries. Unfortunately Asbestos was detected in the sheetrock (soffits) so there was an abatement removal of that before any other demo could begin.

We have to admit we had our doubts about installing their desired black cabinets with inset bead board design doors; we thought it might make the space seem too dark. Happily we were proven wrong, the black intertwined with light grey uppers anchors the white Quartz LG Viatera Rococo countertops and textured white backsplash tiles making a stunning combination. Lighting with new can lights (out with the old fluorescent box) and under new cabinet lighting also plays a huge role in keeping things – pardon the pun – light. Also, electrical receptacles and switches were tucked underneath the cabinets to give the backsplash a clean uninterrupted look.

Stainless steel appliances, including an exhaust hood powerful enough to suck up a small animal (just kiddin’), and a unique stainless steel Farm sink complete this kitchen bringing it improved functionality and style. On to the next room makeover in the future.
