More Than Just A Whole in the Wall

This 1987 kitchen was dated, dark and quite separated from other rooms. The original design plan was to knock out the wall between the kitchen and living room, but the budget did not allow for that. So, the compromise was to open the existing teeny tiny pass-through window as wide and open as possible and still keep needed storage in the design. This new pass-through size helped connect with the adjoining dining space from the kitchen and allows for more interaction with others in the great room. Plus, we widened the kitchen entry open another 10”; how did they ever get the appliances through that initial doorway?

Transitional style kitchens exhibit an airy and casual elegance that draws you in. Wood tones are a staple, too. So light stained upper cabinetry is paired with a “Shoreline” blue color base cabinets, a common non-neutral in transitional kitchens and one of the most popular colors in home design. Countertops are Pental’s Misterio Quartz with a 3”x12” white subway tile. Roll out shelving, and pull-out spice rack complete this compact kitchen’s function. And new Coretec Enhanced Plank in “Tulsa Oak” color laid throughout the main living areas create a cohesive look.
