Inspired Retro ’70s Kitchen Makes a Modern Comeback

NW 188th Ave, Portland, OR, 97229

Probably a beauty back in the day, this 1969 split level home’s kitchen was enclosed by walls from the main living spaces. In order to get the clearance needed for an entire open concept design a 23’ beam plus a 12’ was installed. A new patio slider door was relocated over to accommodate the new pantry wall.

The new kitchen sink is placed exactly where the old one was, but all other appliances were placed in deliberate areas for the new design and function. We love these ceiling exhaust fans that tuck up away flush into ceiling.

These homeowners were not afraid of color. Translating past color trends into modern spaces, the sleek new cabinetry with flat paneled doors and drawers are a mix of European Beach wood lightly stained mixed with painted Sherwin Williams “Saguaro” green. Floating shelves adorn the sink wall over the matte white 3”x12” tile in a stacked pattern holding a variety of items. The island breakfast bar side has custom cubbies to hold oodles of personal books with yes, more storage cabinets below. Luckily the homeowners had a lot of leftover engineered flooring in which we laced into the existing floor for a seamless look, plus saving money.

Other mentionable changes were the sensational light fixtures chosen for the dining room and entry stairwell. The front door was replaced with a new tall double five paneled doors in rain glass, plus new clear transom window above. Talking about letting the light in… Beautiful!
