How Removing a Wall Can Open Your World

This split level family house built in 1978 had a very closed off kitchen. With a toddler and a new family addition on the way, the homeowners wanted an open kitchen for interaction and keeping a parental eye on the little ones onto the dining and living spaces. By removing the wall that separated the kitchen from everything did pose a few challenges; a budget only allowed for keeping the hardwood flooring (because there was none left for any patching) and the roof trusses interfered with allowing a ceiling exhaust fan to be completely flush mount. The least costly solution was to build out as shallow as possible and wrap in drywall and painted to match the ceiling.

The Modern Country inspired kitchen has cabinet uppers in a Hickory full of character and lowers painted with Sherwin Williams Bunglehouse Blue that were designed to fit the space with as much storage impact as possible. This includes a blind corner swing out, trash pull out, pull out spice rack drawer and behind the peninsula open cabinet for more storage. The floating shelves serve dual purpose as holding food containers and displaying décor.  Pental Misterio Quartz countertop wraps the white farm sink and vertical laid white picket tiled backsplash adds to the country charm. Extra can lights and LED strip under cabinet & shelves lighting brighten the once cavernous kitchen.

To build up that country vibe is the super wide barn door that was built to cover the pantry closet with easy access to items.  Clever and practical.
