Making an Entrance

A grand entrance needed a “step up” to elevate its intended impact. The bottom step was boxed off for a cleaner more modern look and gone are the wimpy curved newel posts surrounded by three skinny common spindles that you can find in just about all 90’s houses, truly a weird configuration. New boxed newel posts now anchor the railing.  To absorb some of the cost of the remodel, the original curved railing was repurposed (sanded down and stained darker) and modified to fit the new newel posts. What makes this staircase truly distinctive are the rustic metal balusters (by House of Forgings) set in a pattern with the triple ovals placed between every two of the plain ones. The homeowners’ decided to keep the carpeted stairs so new stair tread caps were placed and stained to match the railing in a darker brown grey. To keep all the millwork in unison the newel posts were painted in the same white.
